Submission Guidelines

We want serious, disciplined, high quality poetry. We are very open to new poets or those who have not been published before.  Poetry may be written on any topic, whether it is overtly religious or not. Our aim is to publish poetry by those who have studied poetry and who understand how to craft language.

Poets may submit up to 5 poems at a time. Writers may submit 2 essays at a time.

Poems may be up to two pages in length. Essays may be up to three typed pages in length (double-spaced).

WE ARE URGING ALL WRITERS TO SUBMIT THEIR WORK EXCLUSIVELY ONLINE. PLEASE SEND SUBMISSIONS TO penwoodreview@gmail.com.

Send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with any correspondence or inquiries. Do not send submissions. Our mailing address is P. O. Box 862, Los Alamitos, CA 90720.

Do not submit previously published work or work under consideration elsewhere.

Readings are done only in February and August. Please submit closer to those months for faster response.

Payment to Poets:

Because we are a small, independent journal, we are unable to pay poets in copies or fees. However, writers who are published will receive $4.00 off the subscription price ($16.00) and will receive one additional free copy of the issue in which their work appears. A subscription or single-copy purchase must be made in order to receive the free copy. (A purchase is NOT required in order to be published.) Make checks payable to The Penwood Review.
